Thoughts on Motivation

By Brenda Christie

One of the most fascinating concepts I learned about while studying Project Management is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, a theory put forth in 1943 by psychologist Abraham Maslow in his paper, "A Theory of Motivation".

It is a theory of the general growth pattern of people once their basic needs of food, shelter, companionship and belonging have been satisfied, and can be used to understand why it is easier to work with some stakeholders than others.

The five levels of Maslow's Hierarchy, from most basic starting at the bottom to most advanced at the top are: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization.
